A recorder hard disk does not provide a fixed number of days for every CCTV system. Retention changes with the amount of video each camera creates and the way the recorder stores it.
List the variables before selecting storage
Camera count is only the beginning. Resolution, frames per second, scene movement, compression, image quality and hours of recording all affect daily storage use.
Two systems with the same number of cameras can have very different retention when one records high-detail busy scenes continuously and the other records quieter areas on motion.
- Number and resolution of cameras
- Frames per second and quality setting
- H.264 or H.265 compression support
- Continuous, scheduled or motion recording
Define the required retention period
Decide how far back an incident is normally discovered. A retail counter may need enough time for transaction questions, while an office or institution may have a different review process.
Add reasonable capacity for variation instead of sizing the disk to an exact theoretical figure. Real scenes and settings may use more storage than a simple estimate.
Understand overwrite and disk health
Most recorders overwrite the oldest footage automatically when storage is full. Staff should understand that a required clip must be exported before it reaches the overwrite point.
Use surveillance-rated storage where appropriate and monitor disk warnings. A recorder showing live video does not guarantee that the hard disk is recording correctly.
Test playback and evidence export
After configuration, search several times and channels to confirm recording is continuous where expected. Check the date, time and time zone because incorrect timestamps reduce the value of evidence.
Demonstrate export to a USB drive or supported network location. The responsible person should be able to preserve a clip without changing recording settings.
Plan for the result, then select the equipment
Set the retention requirement first, calculate storage from the actual camera configuration and verify recording health regularly. Storage planning is part of surveillance design, not an accessory decision.
